2018 Sono-Assisted Preparation and Characterization of Biochar /Mgal-Layered Double Hydroxide Composite

Biochar is a solid material generally produced by pyrolyzing carbon-rich biomass with little or no oxygen at relatively low temperatures [1, 2]. Agricultural biomasses and solid wastes are ideal, abundant and low-cost raw materials for biochar. Muğla has a generous agricultural biomass and solid waste potential. Among them, pine (Pinus brutia) cones exist every year in large quantities. Biochar is believed to have tremendous potential for environmental and agricultural practices due to its fascinating properties such as high surface area and excellent stability [3]. It can be used to remove various contaminants; however, the raw biochar has limited adsorption capacity. Therefore, there is an increasing trend on the production of modified biochars with novel features and surface properties [4]. In the present study, to hold advantage of the recent developments a biochar /MgAl-layered double hydroxide composite was prepared via pyrolysis of pine cone by a modified method of Li et al. [3]. Characterization of original biomass, raw biochar and composite were performed by using various techniques. The pH and conductivity of the samples were determined according to the European Biochar Certificate- Guidelines for a Sustainable Production of Biochar [5]. The FTIR spectra of the adsorbents were recorded in the range of 4000-400 cm-1. The morphological properties of the samples were characterized using a by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM JEOL JSM-7600 F). The biochar and composite was characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer. The BET surface area of samples was determined by a NOVA 2200e Quantachrome Instrument. The results showed that the layered double hydroxide particles were successfully loaded onto biochar. However, further studies should be conducted to determine the adsorption capacity of the composite.
